Refugio Villavientos
The place
Free refuge at about 3100 m, a former forester's house once used by rangers arriving by vehicle via the nearby track, on the Loma Pelá in the Sierra Nevada National Park (province of Granada, Andalusia). Rectangular single-storey building with simple wooden platforms. Official capacity 8 places, up to 12 people comfortably. Free access, no charge, no booking. Located on the track linking the Collado de la Carihuela to Capileira, right at the Lomapelada bend, just before the Caldera coming from the Carihuela. No obstruction in front of the door, spectacular view towards the Alpujarra granadina and the Mediterranean on clear days; the west-facing view is known for some of the most beautiful sunsets in the Sierra Nevada.
Getting there
Le refuge se rejoint par la piste non goudronnée dite « Camino de los Franceses » (aussi appelée Camino del Mulhacén), qui relie le pic du Veleta au village de Capileira sur environ 23 km. Cette piste, fermée à la circulation motorisée privée, devient impraticable en hiver du fait de l'altitude.
The setting
Abri à un seul niveau, ancien mais bien conservé : porte à deux battants, petite fenêtre, grande table avec bancs, coin réchaud et plateformes de couchage en bois pour une douzaine de personnes, sans cheminée ni point d'eau courant fiable. Le sentier d'accès traverse un environnement de haute montagne offrant des vues sur plusieurs lacs d'altitude (ibones) de la Sierra Nevada.
