The place

A free refuge set in an oak grove at the foot of huge limestone walls in the eastern Picos de Europa (Liébana valley, Cantabria), famous in the climbing world. Run by the Montañeros de Liébana club, the site is a favourite base for climbing routes and ascents in the eastern Picos de Europa, in a magical setting of high karstic walls. An outstanding site for observing birds of prey: numerous griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures and, more rarely, bearded vultures. Free bivouacking is also possible alongside the refuge. The Liébana area lies within the Picos de Europa National Park and is a central starting point for exploring the eastern massif from Espinama and Fuente Dé.
