Refugio La Salamanca
The place
Ruined refuge at 1789 m, on the summit of La Salamanca, in the Sierra de Guadarrama (province of Madrid, not the Sierra Nevada despite the confusion). Built in the 1960s by ICONA (Instituto para la Conservación de la Naturaleza), now defunct, as part of a set of identical refuges. Run-down and partly in ruins, a silent witness to the thousands of mountain walkers who have passed through or slept there. Theoretical capacity 10 to 12 people; in very poor condition, offering almost no shelter from rain and wind.
Getting there
Le refuge se trouve juste à côté du sommet du Cerro de la Salamanca, à la limite des provinces de Madrid et Ávila, commune de Peguerinos (Ávila). Plusieurs itinéraires de randonnée et de VTT y mènent, notamment depuis le barrage de La Jarosa ; c'est un refuge libre, accessible sans clé.
The setting
Situé dans la Sierra de Guadarrama (Castille-et-León / Communauté de Madrid), à environ 1770-1790 m d'altitude, à proximité immédiate du sommet du Cerro de la Salamanca.
