The place
Refugio del Cabezo del Santo in the Sierra Cebollera, Villoslada de Cameros sector (La Rioja, Spain), at 1593 m elevation, in the Riojan Sistema Ibérico range. Free, unstaffed refugio inside the Sierra Cebollera Natural Park (established 1995), an area of beech, Scots pine and subalpine grasslands. Home to the pastoral chozos of the Cameros shepherds (transhumant herders), near the San Millán de la Cogolla monasteries (UNESCO, birthplace of written Castilian, 11th century).
