Refugio de Majadas de Fuentes Carrionas
The place
Unstaffed refuge set in the Majada de Fuentes Carrionas, on the northern slope of the Montaña Palentina, at the heart of the Parque Natural Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre (province of Palencia, Castile and León). The area holds the Laguna de Fuentes Carrionas, source of the río Carrión within a textbook glacial cirque, and the Pico Curavacas (2524 m), often considered the province's highest point. The refuge is not in great condition but remains open at all times for hikers and climbers tackling the region's peaks. A setting of high Cantabrian grasslands, chamois and upland peat bogs.
Getting there
Approach from Vidrieros via the Valle de Pineda and the Laguna de Fuentes Carrionas, or from Triollo/Cardaño. Base for the Curavacas.
The setting
Glacial cirque of Fuentes Carrionas, source of the río Carrión, below the Pico Curavacas, Montaña Palentina.
