The place
Refugio de Los Cardos (Thistle Refuge) in the Montes de León/Cantabrian Mountains, Villablino/Laciana area (province of León, Castile and León, Spain), at 1263 m elevation, on the southern side of the range. An unstaffed, free-access refugio within the Laciana UNESCO biosphere reserve, a former coal-mining region (mines closed in 2018). Area of beeches, Pyrenean oaks, and Cantabrian meadows, habitat of the brown bear (Ursus arctos).
