The place
Refugio de Costalago in the Sierra de la Demanda, Burgos province (Castile and León, Spain), at 1075 m altitude, on the northern foothills of the Sistema Ibérico. Part of the continuous Sierra Demanda cluster (batches 235+247). An unmanned, free-access refugio beside a lake (Costalago), a legacy of the Burgos serranías with their monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla (UNESCO, birthplace of written Castilian in the 11th century). An area of beech, pyrenean oak, and Scots pine.
