The place
Forest refuge at Campos de Hernán Perea, a high plateau between 1600 and 1800 m in the Sierra de Segura (province of Jaén, Andalusia). One of three forest refuges on the plateau (with La Monterilla and Ramblaseca), built by ICONA (the Spanish forestry administration) in the 1970s. Renovated after 2013 as part of the Andalusian government's GR 247 "Bosques del Sur" route, a minimal shelter with no bathroom, shower or guaranteed water or electricity. A typical stop on this vast steppe-like high plateau, rare in Andalusia, favourable to wildlife watching (deer, raptors) and long self-sufficient traverses.
