The place
Free refuge ("refugi lliure") set at 1,527 m within the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park (Catalonia, Spain, provinces of Berguedà / Cerdanya / Alt Urgell). A remarkable location on the eastern foothills of the emblematic Cadí massif, famous for its vertical limestone cliffs and Catalan pastoral heritage. A basic, freely accessible building, a rustic stopover for hikers on the trails of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park (established in 1983, the largest natural park in Catalonia with 41,060 hectares). An outstanding forest and mineral setting: beech forests, high-altitude fir forests, subalpine grasslands, the Cadí's impressive limestone cliffs. Emblematic wildlife: chamois, Iberian ibex (reintroduced population), golden eagle, bearded vulture (reintroduced in the Pyrenees), capercaillie (the last Catalan population), white-backed woodpecker. A stage on the trails linking Cadí-Moixeró to the Pedraforca (an emblematic peak) and the themed loops of Catalan Cerdanya.
