Refugi Caro UEC "Pepito Anguera": A Mountain Lodge in a Unique Natural Setting The Refugi Caro UEC "Pepito Anguera", built in 1965 and recently renovated, is a mid-mountain lodge belonging to the Unió Excursionista de Catalunya. Located at 1,090 meters altitude, at Pla del Mascar, in the Parc Natural dels Ports, this refuge offers a unique experience in a privileged setting. Refuge Features Altitude: 1,090 meters. Capacity: 34 sleeping places, spread over two floors and an attic. Services: Dining room with fireplace and wood stove, bar, kitchen, shared bathrooms and showers with hot water, free Wi-Fi, mountain library. Adjoining areas: Free refuge when the warden is absent, controlled camping area, play area and private parking. Activities and Excursions The Refugi Caro is a waypoint on several hiking routes, such as the GR 7 and GR 171, and is part of the Estels del Sud traverse. From the refuge you can go on excursions, walks, climbing, caving, mountain biking routes and canyoning in the Parc Natural dels Ports. Access By car: Paved road from Roquetes to the refuge. On foot: Waypoint on the GR 7, with access from various points ranging from 2 to 8 hours' walk. History The need for a refuge in the Ports area led the UEC of Tortosa to acquire land in 1955 and open the first refuge in 1956. In 1964 a new refuge was planned, which finally opened its doors in September 1965 and has borne the name "Pepito Anguera" since 2005. Ascents and Traverses The Refugi Caro is the starting point for ascents of various peaks such as Mont Caro, la Barcina and Mola de Catí. It is also part of long-distance trails such as the GR 7 and GR 171, as well as the Estels del Sud traverse. Availability and Bookings Opening: Year-round.
