The place
Staffed hut at 2640 m in the commune of Crissolo (Valle Po, Piedmont), between the Lago Grande di Viso and the Lago di Costagrande, at the foot of Monte Viso (3841 m, the highest peak of the Cottian Alps). At the heart of the Monte Viso Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Inaugurated in 1905, owned by the Club Alpino Italiano (central headquarters), dedicated to Quintino Sella (1827-1884), scientist, mountaineer and minister of the Kingdom of Italy, founder of the CAI. Capacity expanded during extensions in 1927 and then 1975-1979 to 145 beds, including 20 in the winter room open all year. About 90 people accommodated in summer. Access on foot only, via marked mountain trails.
