The place
Unstaffed FFCAM (Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne) refuge set at 2495 m in the Néouvielle Nature Reserve (municipality of Betpouey, Bigorre, Hautes-Pyrénées). A remarkable location at the heart of the Néouvielle massif, an area renowned for its glacial lakes and Pyrenean heritage. A distinctive ogival building that is part of the Pyrenean architectural heritage, offering an exceptional panorama over the north face of Pic Long (3192 m, the highest point of the French Pyrenees outside the Vignemale) and the Brèche de Roland. Capacity of 8 comfortable mattresses and matching blankets. The nearest water source is Lac du Pourtet, about 400 m behind the refuge. Managed by the CAF de Lourdes-Cauterets — a recommended contribution of €8 per person (box on site) toward firewood and upkeep. An exceptional mineral and lake-studded setting: glacial lakes of the Hautes-Pyrénées, mountain pine forests, iconic wildlife: chamois, marmot (reintroduced in 1948), golden eagle, bearded vulture. A base for the Néouvielle loop and ascents of Pic Long, Turon de Néouvielle, Pic de la Coume de l'Ours and Pic des Trois Conseillers.
