Refuge de Merdençon

The place

A typical buron of the Sancy massif converted into an unstaffed hut, the Merdençon is a stone building roofed with lauze slabs, located in the central zone of the Chastreix-Sancy nature reserve in the Puy-de-Dôme. It belongs to the Chastreix pastoral cooperative, which leaves it freely accessible without maintaining it: the cleanliness of the place depends on each visitor, while major works are handled by the reserve and the local council. Thirteen sleeping spots, a sink with drinking water, a few utensils and non-perishable provisions left by passers-by. Reserve regulations: dogs forbidden even on a leash outside the GR30, bikes forbidden, picking forbidden, no litter left on site.
