Refuge du Cuchet
The place
Former staffed refuge that became unstaffed due to lack of profitability, at 2160 m on the GR 5, at the gates of the core zone of the Parc national de la Vanoise (Maurienne, Savoie). Capacity of 24 places in dormitory with mattresses and blankets, wood stove, gas cooker, dishes, solar lighting, sink and fountain in summer. Open year-round, access in 2h from the nearest car park for 700 m of ascent. Camping forbidden around the refuge. Overnight fee 5 to 12 € via the paiementrefugenongardeparcnational.vanoise.com platform after the stay. Access on snowshoes or ski touring in winter.
Getting there
L'accès se fait par le GR5 depuis Lanslebourg ou Lanslevillard (Val-Cenis), dans la zone cœur du Parc national de la Vanoise. Le refuge se trouve à 2160 m d'altitude.
The setting
Le refuge se trouve en zone cœur du Parc national de la Vanoise, où camping, bivouac, chiens et feux sont proscrits aux abords. Un point d'eau (fontaine), actif en été, se trouve à moins de 100 m.
A bit of history
Le Refuge du Cuchet, ancien refuge gardé du Parc national de la Vanoise, est devenu une cabane non gardée, la présence permanente d'un gardien n'étant plus économiquement viable. Les agents du Parc continuent toutefois de l'inspecter régulièrement.
