The place
Refuge des Méandres in Bas-Saint-Laurent, Saint-Pamphile/Sainte-Perpétue area (Kamouraska/L'Islet, Quebec, Canada), at 474 m elevation, in the Appalachian foothills. Part of the continuous Quebec Bas-Saint-Laurent cluster (batches 234-352). A SÉPAQ or outfitter refuge ("Méandres" refers to the river's floodplain loops typical of Bas-Saint-Laurent, and the Kamouraska wildlife reserve's migrating Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) fishery), in a zone of Appalachian maple-birch forest and near the Kamouraska stretch of the St. Lawrence River (a 15 km-wide fjord near the Saguenay mouth, home to the St. Lawrence beluga, Delphinapterus leucas, 900 individuals, an isolated but resilient population, fishing banned since 1979 though 30 deaths a year still occur from toxic algal blooms); plus the 1690 Phips landing, New England English forces, the battle of Neuville, and Frontenac's "Foudre" cannon fire).
