The place
Unstaffed chalet-refuge of the CAF Prades Canigou, at 2,261 m altitude in the Canigou massif (Casteil, Pyrénées-Orientales, Vallespir region). Capacity for 20 beds in a single dormitory (blankets provided only during staffed periods). Restored by the club's young members and volunteers; fitted with a wood stove since 15 October 2022. Facilities: duvets, blankets, sheet rental (when staffed), washbasins, showers, running water, dishware, equipped kitchen, wood heating, wifi, meeting room, packed-lunch room, indoor toilets. Water source often dry in summer, firewood scarce nearby. Hard to locate in winter or bad weather. Pets allowed. Access beyond the place called La Lipodère towards the Col des Boucacers.
Getting there
Départ du parking du Randé (Mariailles), à 1 520 m d'altitude. Comptez environ 2h00 de marche pour 570 m de dénivelé positif jusqu'au refuge. Accès routier possible été comme hiver selon l'enneigement. En transport en commun : gares SNCF de Perpignan, Prades ou Villefranche-de-Conflent, puis bus ligne 240 jusqu'à Vernet-les-Bains.
The setting
Refuge situé à 2261 m d'altitude sur la commune de Casteil (Pyrénées-Orientales), dans le massif Puigmal-Canigou-Albères (Vallespir), après le lieu-dit la Lipodère en direction du col des Boucacers. Il constitue une étape sur la traversée depuis Mantet vers le Canigou ou depuis Mariailles vers le Vallespir, à proximité du pic des Sept Hommes et des Esquerdes de Rotja. Le refuge, restauré par des bénévoles, est équipé d'un poêle à bois depuis octobre 2022 ; son approvisionnement en eau dépend d'une source souvent asséchée l'été.

The refuge depends on the flow of the spring, which is often dry in summer.Firewood is not in the immediate vicinity. In winter weather conditions or fog, the refuge can be hard to find. The refuge is restored by the club's young members and volunteers, and has been fitted with a wood stove since 15.10.2022
