Refuge de la Loubatière

The place

ONF refuge at 715 m in the Loubatière state forest (Lacombe, Aude), one of the finest forests in the Montagne Noire (400 ha). Near former mines. As of a February 2018 visit: fireplace, large table with benches, 2-place sleeping platform, water and firewood nearby. Worth noting in the forest: the ruins of a former charterhouse abandoned before the Revolution — the monks, lacking vocations, means of subsistence and threatened by bandits, left the site in the early 15th century to take refuge at the Saïx monastery near Castres in 1423.
