Refuge de la Chapelle Saint-Eutrope
The place
Refuge adjoining the Saint-Eutrope chapel, located at 624 m altitude on a rocky peak on the north side of the Espinouse, at Castanet-le-Haut (Hérault). The chapel was built in the 12th century by the Benedictines of Cluny to house the saint's tomb. Restored in the 1980s. Clear views of Mont de Sète, the Mediterranean, and the Pyrenees on a clear day, as well as of the Gorges d'Héric on the Caroux side.
Getting there
From Andabre or Nougayrol via the GR/Compostela route, then a steeply climbing marked trail. About 30 min and over 300 steps.

Open refuge attached below the chapel. Restored in the 1980s. Very wide-ranging panorama! The furnishings consist of: - 1 table - 1 low chair - 2 saws - 1 broom - grills, frying pans, saucepans, a large pot, and cutlery (dusty) - folded inflatable mattresses There are a few draughts and the fireplace backdrafts in strong wind. There is quite a lot of deadwood all along the ascent trail. Sleeping is on the loft (3 people), possibly more on the floor. The spring had a low flow (mid-May 2021); I doubt it's active in summer. Access from Andabre or Nougayrol via the GR/Compostela route, then via a trail marked with a "SAINT EUTROPE" sign. This trail climbs quickly and turns into stairs for the last half. It is possible to continue along the ridge to the summit via the path opposite the refuge.
