The place
The Refuge Duca degli Abruzzi all'Oriondé sits at 2802 m altitude on the south face of the Matterhorn (Cervin), in the municipality of Breuil-Cervinia, in the Aosta Valley. Built in 1929 by Amato Maquignaz as a base for climbers preparing to ascend the Matterhorn, it bears the name of Duke Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, an Italian explorer and mountaineer. After renovation, it now offers 2- and 4-bed rooms with private bathrooms instead of dormitories. It serves as a stopover for those wanting a taste of high mountains without technical climbing. Access from Breuil-Cervinia takes about 2h30 on foot.
