The place

Refuge Chaloin: History and Ruins The Refuge Chaloin, with a capacity of 30 places, opened in 1971 but was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1975. It has never been rebuilt since, due to the advent of the Manganu hut, located a little further south. As of 2022, only ruins remain, notably breeze-block low walls about 80 cm high, along with the wide grassy flat of its bivouac area, unfortunately very damp due to the proximity of two watercourses and various seepage. The hut stood by the GR20 trail, on a flat on the right bank of the Tavignanu, just south of the ford across the Campiuncellu stream. Although the Refuge Chaloin still appears on some old maps or guides, it is no longer an accommodation option. It was originally managed by the Regional Natural Park of Corsica, which was responsible for its construction and upkeep. It is today an important vestige of the history of mountain routes, a reminder of the hazards and challenges huts can face.
