The place
Mountain Refuge: A Unique Place in the Heart of Nature The mountain refuge, set in a picturesque location, is an ideal resting spot for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Offering capacity for 4 places on mattresses, it can be reached by car when weather conditions allow. Accommodation and Amenities The building has several compartments, mainly used by horse riders, with only one space open to hikers. The interior consists of a large room with an unusual layout, including a fireplace that is not very effective for heating. Even so, a natural water source is available nearby. Access and Availability The refuge can be reached from the Col de Mantet via a forest track, or from the Esquères de Rotja ridge by descending from the Porteille de Rotja. Online booking is recommended, and the site is open seasonally, generally from early June to late September. Ownership and Renovation The refuge is owned by BPCE / Caisse d'Épargne, and the most recent renovations may have brought improvements since the last visit. Total renovation costs came to 7.5 million euros, partly funded by public and private partners.
Getting there
Accessible depuis le col de Mantet par une piste forestière, ou par la crête via la Porteille de Rotja ; piste carrossable hors enneigement.
The setting
Cabane non gardée dans le massif du Conflent/Canigou, au sein de la Réserve naturelle nationale de Py (4427 ha, de 950 à 2465m d'altitude). Grande salle à l'architecture disproportionnée, mal adaptée au chauffage ; une partie réservée aux chasseurs/bergers, une seule zone dédiée aux randonneurs. Cheminée présente mais peu efficace.
