Refuge d'Ambel
The place
Fully refurbished refuge at 1222 m on the Ambel plateau (Vercors, Drôme). Capacity 24 sleeping places, free access. Large three-storey stone building: main room with a large fireplace, 3 large tables and a 5-place sleeping platform; upstairs with 3 sleeping platforms; large lower room with picnic table and wood stocks. Rules of use: maximum 1 night per person, bivouacking allowed only near the refuge, fires strictly forbidden, dogs not allowed, water unmonitored, take all rubbish away with you, respect nearby livestock. Shortest access via the Col de la Bataille road: stop at the Resistance memorial in a bend with a car park, then a 20-minute walk on a marked path. Refuge fountain nearby.
