Refuge Carè Alto (Dante Ongari)
The place
Rifugio of the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT) at 2459 m (external sources; DB listing at 2469 m, discrepancy not corrected), on the long east ridge of the Carè Alto, near the notch known as Bus del Gat, on the Val Conca side, in the Adamello group. Municipality of Pelugo (Trentino), accessible from Pian della Sega (1250 m) in Val di Borzago in about 3h30 via a marked trail. Built in 1912 by SARCA ('Società Alpinisti rifugio Carè Alto') then handed over to SAT, reinaugurated in summer 1988 after major renovation. A site marked by the Great War: an Austro-Hungarian logistics base of around thirty buildings (power station, telephony, wooden chapel built by Russian prisoners). 80 staffed beds in summer (June-September) and 8 winter-room places. Ideal base for ascents of the Carè Alto, the Corno di Cavento, and alpine traverses.
