The place
Backcountry hut located at 901 m in the Kaikoura area (Marlborough region, South Island, New Zealand, coordinates 42.13 S, 173.05 E). A notable location in the backcountry of the Seaward Kaikoura Range, famous for its snow-capped peaks reaching 2885 m (Manakau) and its spectacular meeting of sea and mountain — the range lies less than 10 km from the Pacific coast. A basic building managed by the DOC (Department of Conservation) or on stewardship land, open access under typical New Zealand backcountry practice. Kaikoura's exceptional setting: southern beech forests, subalpine tussock grasslands, coastal marine fauna (whales, sperm whales, Hector's dolphins) visible from the peaks, emblematic land fauna such as the kea (endemic alpine parrot), New Zealand falcon, kiwi.
