The place
Rifugio Quinto Reggimento Alpini - Bertarelli, on a rocky spur in the Val Zebrù (municipality of Valfurva, Sondrio province, Lombardy), within the Stelvio National Park in the Rhaetian Alps (Ortles-Cevedale massif) — 2877 m. Inaugurated in 1884 under the name Capanna Milano (CAI Milano), extended in 1901. During the Great War, a defence hub for the Val Zebrù and the "war on the Ortles". Restored in 1919-1920, dedicated to the 5th Alpini Regiment in 1926 in memory of all the Alpini who fell on this front, then rebuilt two years later on the initiative of Guido Bertarelli with a team of Alpini, inaugurated in 1929. That same year, a second, lower building was constructed, which, after refurbishment funded by the Bertarelli family, was dedicated in 1969 to the memory of Guido Bertarelli (CAI Milano president 1938-1945, Alpini combatant in 1915-1918). Renovated, comfortable structure, refined cuisine, bar, rooms with 6 to 12 beds; starting point for several ascents, glacier 3 minutes away.

A bit of history
Ce refuge, construit en 1884 sous le nom de « Capanna Milano », a servi de poste militaire italien pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Il a ensuite été renommé en hommage à un commandant des troupes alpines durant ce conflit, d'où son nom complet confirmant le lien avec le 5e régiment alpin italien. Propriété de la section de Milan du Club Alpin Italien, il est géré depuis 2004 par la même personne.
A word from the warden
Ce refuge est géré par la même personne depuis plus de vingt ans et propose une soixantaine de couchages répartis en chambres de six à douze personnes ; il n'ouvre que pendant la saison estivale, de la mi-juin à la mi-septembre.
