The place
Basic 4-bunk DOC hut at 960 m in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ). Restored in 2021 by Backcountry Trust volunteers. Rainwater tank, wood stove. Access from the end of Leatherwood Road on the western side of the Wakarara Range, through Gwavas forest (PanPac Forestries property). A steep track passes a radio mast before descending to the hut. Hunting: weekend permit required (issued on Mondays for the following Saturday-Sunday), max 2 groups / 2 hunters per group. Hunting dogs allowed with a special permit. Free.
