Pouakai Hut

The place

DOC serviced hut with thirty-four bunks located at 1162 m in Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki (Egmont/Taranaki National Park). New building opened in August 2025 (replacing the previous one), with four rooms and coastal views. Facilities: wood heating, cold running water, mattresses provided, outdoor deck for day visitors, toilets. Short pleasant walks to the Pouākai Tarns and viewpoints over Taranaki Maunga. Rate 25 NZD adult and 12.50 NZD youth 5-17 years per night (free up to age 4). Booking required year-round online, availability until 30 June 2027; same-day bookings accepted until 8 p.m. subject to availability. Backcountry Hut Pass accepted. Access via the Mangorei Track (2 h, 5 km), Kaiauai Track (5-6 h, 10 km) or Holly Hut Track (5-7 h, 12 km). Camping not permitted at the hut; the closest alternative is Holly Hut.
