The place

Metsähallitus's Vuokratupa Pookin pirtti, situated on top of Pookivaara in Rokua National Park, in the municipality of Utajärvi (North Ostrobothnia). A historic building erected in the 1940s by a local conservation association as a ski shelter. Eight bunks spread across two rooms with a kitchenette. Equipment: gas stove, wood stove and two fireplaces for heating, dry toilet, bunk beds with mattresses, pillows and blankets, battery-powered LED lanterns (bring D batteries). No electricity. Shared woodshed and observation tower on site. Rate 80 EUR per night (2026-2027). Access by car to the Pookin car park in summer, then a 900 m uphill walk. In winter, bring snowshoes or skis. Nearby trails: Keisarinkierros (Emperor's Trail), Syvyyden kierros (Depth Trail), and Rokua mountain-bike tracks. Booking via Eräluvat.fi. Check-in 2 pm, check-out noon; cleaning and waste removal are the guests' responsibility.
