The place
Rifugio Cesare Ponti at 2559 m in the Preda Rossa valley, municipality of Val Masino (Valtellina, Lombardy). Affiliated with the CAI Milano section. The first refuge in Valmasino, the "Capanna Disgrazia", was built in 1881 by Count Francesco Lurani Cernuschi near the current site; a second, larger structure, the "Capanna Cecilia", followed in 1890. The current refuge dates from 1928, modernised in 1999. Dedicated to Cesare Ponti, founder of a private bank and advisor to the Milan section of the CAI. 60 beds + 6 in an adjoining winter room. Open mid-June to end of September; from early May on request. Authentic Valtellina cuisine: polenta, pizzoccheri, meats, cheeses, cold cuts. On the Sentiero Roma, an ideal base for the ascent of Monte Disgrazia (3678 m).
