The place

Great Walk hut on the Heaphy Track in Kahurangi National Park (Golden Bay, Nelson/Tasman), perched at Perry Saddle between high points offering views of the Dragons Teeth and Mt Olympus. At 871 m. Capacity 28 bunks on shared sleeping platforms with mattresses, heating, gas cooking, lighting, cold running water. Bring your own sleeping bag and utensils. Long-drop toilets, no shower. Activities: swimming in the deep pool at Gorge Creek, listening for great spotted kiwi in the evening. Seasonal rates NZ$30-66 adult depending on nationality (NZ vs international) and season; youth 5-17 half price; children under 5 free. Standard Backcountry Hut Pass does not apply. DOC booking required. Hut wardens present in summer for weather and trail information.
