Pernu Palotunturi Open Wilderness Hut
The place
Unstaffed free hut at the summit of Iso Palotunturi at 391 m, in western Posio north of the village of Pernu (Lapland, Finland). Hut and shelter with cooking equipment and toilets. Historic building: a former fire watchtower during the Second World War, later an air surveillance post. 4 km round-trip hiking trail (2-3 h, 100 m elevation gain, moderately demanding, sometimes wet). Road and trail open outside the snow season. Starting address: Lamminvaarantie, 97815 Posio (35 km from Posio centre via road R81 then Lamminvaarantie). Old-growth natural spruce forest (200+ years) that has survived logging and fires, in the Mustarinnantunturi-Kiekkikaira wilderness area.
