Pennyfield Lockhouse

The place

Lockhouse 22 on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, at Pennyfield Lock in Montgomery County, Maryland (12100 Pennyfield Lock Rd, Potomac). Original house built in 1830, lock completed in 1831; the name is a historical misspelling of the Pennifield family, longtime lockkeepers George and Charles. President Grover Cleveland stayed here on fishing trips. Now restored by the C&O Canal Trust as part of the "Canal Quarters" programme: overnight bed-and-breakfast-style booking, rate $120/night (May-October) or $75/night (November-April). Standard C&O lock: 30 m long, 4.6 m wide, 4.9 m lift.
