Peña del Altar
The place
A viewpoint and shelter at Peña del Altar, perched on the eastern peak (1818 m) of the Sierra de la Pandera (Sierra Sur de Jaén, Andalusia), separated from the main summit by a large valley. Two INFOCA cabins remain here: a modern one, occupied by forest rangers during the fire-risk months, and an older one used as a free shelter by hikers and climbers. The site offers one of the finest lookouts in Andalusia over the Sierra Sur, the Quiebrajano valley and, in the background, the Sierra Mágina massif (Pico Mágina, 2167 m). Access via a gravel track, sometimes rocky, from Valdepeñas de Jaén; numerous marked trails from La Pandera and Cárcheles.
