Pechuck Lookout

The place

A historic fire lookout tower on BLM land in northwestern Oregon, at 1,322 m (4,338 feet), on the southeastern boundary of the Table Rock Wilderness near Molalla. Established in 1918, the current stone-and-timber lookout was built in the early 1930s by John Oblack, a Czechoslovak-born craftsman from Molalla, with the help of a Portland mason. **The only stone fire lookout still standing in Oregon**. A cupola with windows on all four sides and panoramic views; ground floor living quarters, upper floor fire-spotting deck. Listed on the National Historic Lookout Register (1990) and the World Fire Lookout Register (1992). Retired from active fire-spotting duty in 1964. Open to the public for free visits and overnight stays, first-come-first-served. Accessed from the Rooster Rock trailhead.
