The place

Standard 6-bunk DOC hut in the Upper Wairau River (Nelson/Tasman), Nelson Lakes sector, at 1,130 m. Backcountry, off-track: independent navigation skills essential, with map, compass and GPS. Access via Rainbow Station after contacting the manager (+64 021 111 6412). No bookings — pay by hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass in the honesty box (NZ$10/5 until 30 June 2026). No hunting permitted. Check road conditions with Marlborough District Council before departure; watch for unbridged river crossings.
