The place
Standard DOC hut with 6 bunks at 1,320 m, on an exposed ridge of Ruahine Forest Park (Manawatu/Whanganui and Hawke's Bay, NZ). Water tank and wood stove. Built in 1960 by the NZ Forest Service, replaced in 2008 by DOC. Named after Robert Park, the first Surveyor General of Hawke's Bay. Long, exposed access routes: Wakarara Road End 10 km / 4-5 h (including a river crossing), Masters Shelter 13.5 km / 6 h, Sentry Box Hut 6.4 km / 2 h 40. No booking required: Standard ticket or Backcountry Hut Pass.
