The place
Standard DOC 6-bunk hut at 230 m in Aorangi Forest Park (Wairarapa, NZ). Built in 1964 by the NZ Forest Service for pest control, then used for around 25 years by Landcare Research for its possum studies. Open fireplace. Access: Cape Palliser Road via Pararaki Stream (3-4 h, 12 km — landowner permission required), Washpool Hut via Aorangi Crossing (2 h 30-3 h 30, 4.7 km), Kawakawa Hut via Aorangi Crossing (2-3 h, 4.5 km). Honesty box or Backcountry Hut Pass.
