The place

Serviced 10-bunk DOC hut in Remutaka Forest Park (Wellington, Catchpool Valley), at 212 m. Exclusive-use locked hut: booking required via the DOC online system until 30 June 2027. Off-peak rate NZ$100/night; peak season 26 December - 8 February NZ$120/night. Gas cooking, wood heating, composting toilet. Bring candles and toilet paper (no electric lighting). 3 h 30 access from Catchpool car park, several crossings of the Ōrongorongo River — forbidden in flood (flash floods are common). Fire permit required depending on danger level (checkitsalright.co.nz).
