The place

36-bunk hut at 1,046 m on the Lake Waikaremoana Track (Te Urewera, East Coast, NZ). Te Urewera holds a unique legal status in New Zealand: "a living entity." Managed by Te Uru Taumatua (the operational arm of Ngāi Tūhoe). An operational hut, retained under the retention plan (unlike several other Te Urewera huts decommissioned since 2022). Rates: adults $35, youth 5-17 $18, infants free; international rates identical. Standard Backcountry Pass not accepted. Online booking via DOC (Lake Waikaremoana huts and campsites).
