Palmer Bivvy
The place
Basic 2-bunk bivouac managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Clarence Conservation Park, southern Marlborough (South Island, New Zealand), at 670 metres elevation. Free access. Approach via Blind Saddle Road: from Kaikoura, 5 km on SH1 to the Waiau/Mt Lyford junction, then about 25 km inland to the car park at the bridge over the Kahutara River. Vehicle access controlled by a locked gate: prior contact required with Colin Nimmo, Muzzle Station (+64 3 319 5791, muzzle@xtra.co.nz), plus a contribution toward road maintenance costs; road closed to vehicles in winter. No DOC-marked track: independent navigation with map, compass, and GPS required.
