Pakihi Hut

The place

Basic but well-kept hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Urutawa Conservation Area, in the Ōpōtiki district on the East Coast (North Island, New Zealand). Located along the Pakihi Track (part of the Motu Trails network), above Pakihi Stream in dense forest, in the valley where writer Barry Crump lived for about ten years. Building dating from the late 1960s, six bunks, large covered veranda, tent camping space. No booking required, payment via honesty box: 10 NZD/night adult, 5 NZD child, free under 5. Southern access via Motu Road (17 km from Motu, gravel road), northern access via Otara/Pakihi roads (23 km from Opotiki, 9 km of gravel and two fords). One-way for cyclists, two-way for trampers and hunters.
