Pahtavuoma Wilderness Hut

The place

Free open wilderness hut (autiotupa) managed by Metsähallitus in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park (Finnish Lapland), about 300 m west of the boundary between Muonio and Kittilä, on the north bank of the Pahtavuoma bog, east of Lake Äkäsjärvi. A stop at km 31 of the Pallas-Ylläs trail linking the Pallastunturi Nature Centre to Mustakero via Äkässaivo. Two buildings nearby: a converted former alpine dairy hut offering three places, and a former fire-lookout shelter relocated from Ylläs, a cramped two places. Fireplace for heating, no gas, no running water: bog water of poor quality, must be filtered/boiled. Free, open year-round, first come first served.
