Pahautea Hut

The place

Standard hut with 20 bunks and a shelter for campers at the summit of Mount Pirongia, managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Pirongia Forest Park, Waikato region (North Island, New Zealand), at 900 metres altitude. Twenty spaces across two dormitories (sleeping platforms with mattresses). Water from a supply point; no heating or cooking facilities: bring your own stove. Shelter and camping sites nearby. Hut rates until 30 June 2026: Sun-Fri NZD10 adult, NZD5 child (5-17), free under 5; Saturday NZD15 adult, NZD7.50 child. Camping Sun-Fri NZD5 adult, NZD2.50 child; Saturday NZD7.50 adult. Hut and campsite bookings required online; same-day possible until 8pm subject to availability. The hut's name comes from the neighbouring pahautea mountain cedars, aged 600 to 700 years, at the northern limit of their natural range.
