The place

26-bunk DOC Great Walk hut on the Tongariro Northern Circuit, in Tongariro National Park (Tūrangi/Taupō), at 1,360 m elevation. Rates per person per night: peak season (23 Oct-30 April) NZ$44 adult/NZ$22 child resident, NZ$66/NZ$33 international; off-peak season (1 May-22 Oct) NZ$25/NZ$12.50 (resident and international alike); free under age 4. Backcountry Hut Pass valid only from 1 May to 24 October. Online booking mandatory during the Great Walks season; first-come first-served outside that season.
