The place

DOC hut in Te Urewera (Bay of Plenty), at 265 m. **Current status to be verified with Ngāi Tūhoe**: Te Uru Taumatua (TUT) decommissioned 29 huts in the park in 2022 (by burning), ruled illegal by the High Court in 2023; TUT withdrew its appeal at the end of 2023. Sites have no toilets or water, camping is encouraged. Check the interactive Ngāi Tūhoe map or contact the Te Urewera Visitor Centre (+64 6 837 3803, teureweravc@ngaituhoe.iwi.nz) before travelling. Bring a tent, warm sleeping bag, and a distress beacon (no mobile coverage).
