The place

A 12-bunk serviced, bookable hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) on Ōtamahua/Quail Island in Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour, near Christchurch (Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand). Historic building originally from around 1910 (formerly the quarantine station keeper's quarters), fully renovated in 2018 to become visitor accommodation. Rates until 30 June 2026: NZD 25/night per adult on weekdays (Mon-Thu), NZD 12.50 per child; NZD 30 per adult / NZD 15 per child on weekends (Fri-Sun), free for under-5s. Backcountry Hut Pass accepted. Online booking, availability through 30 June 2027, same-day booking possible up to 8 pm. Access by Black Cat Cruises ferry from Lyttelton Wharf, or by kayak/private boat to designated beaches (Whakamaru, Skiers, or Walkers Beach). Restrictions: no open fires, no pets, no drones, no unauthorized vehicles. Wildlife, flora, and heritage are fully protected. Mice are present: store food securely.
