Rifugio Ospizio Sottile: A Historic Refuge in the Alps The Rifugio Ospizio Sottile is a refuge located at 2480 metres altitude in the municipality of Riva Valdobbia (VC), at the Colle di Valdobbia, between the Vogna valley and the Gressoney valley. Known as the highest "Ospizio" in Europe and one of the first refuges built in Italy. Description The refuge has 2 dining rooms on the ground floor, 2 mixed dormitories and 4 private rooms. Under new management, the refuge is open from mid-June to mid-September, with booking strongly recommended. History The refuge is dedicated to Nicolao Sottile, who promoted its construction in the early 19th century to provide shelter for travellers crossing the pass. Previously, a chapel (now incorporated into the refuge) and a stable existed at the pass, but proved insufficient to properly protect travellers from bad weather and cold.
