The place
High-altitude refuge at the foot of Mount Smolikas in the Pindus massif (Epirus, northern Greece — between Mount Tymfi near Ioannina and Mount Vasilitsa near Grevena). At 1750 m in a spot known as “La Nane,” in a dense forest of Bosnian pine (“rovolo,” Pinus heldreichii), it is a stop on the O3 long-distance trail. Stone building, rooms for 6 people; common areas with hall and stove, fireplace, two large dining rooms, separate shower and toilets for men/women. Organized kitchen preparing all meals — many cooked in the traditional wood-fired oven. On Mount Smolikas there are two refuges: the main mountaineering refuge above Palioseli and a smaller emergency refuge (this listing).
