The place

DOC hut in Te Urewera (Bay of Plenty, North Island), at 204 m. **Current status to be verified with Ngāi Tūhoe**: Te Uru Taumatua (TUT) decommissioned 29 huts in the park in October-November 2022 (burned them down); the High Court ruled in 2023 that these destructions were unlawful, and TUT withdrew its appeal in late 2023. The situation remains fluid — check the interactive map on the Ngāi Tūhoe website or contact the Te Urewera Visitor Centre (+64 6 837 3803, teureweravc@ngaituhoe.iwi.nz) before setting out. Visitors are advised to bring a tent, a warm sleeping bag, and a distress beacon, as there is no mobile coverage in the area.
