Oamaru Hut

The place

Standard DOC hut with 12 bunks at 631 m in Kaimanawa Forest Park (Central North Island, NZ), on a small hill overlooking the confluence of the Kaipo, Mohaka, and Oamaru rivers. A good base for sika deer hunting and fishing. Foot access via Clements Mill Road or Taharua Road; helicopter access possible with a permit from the DOC Tūrangi office. No booking required: Standard ticket (adults $10, youth $5, under 4 free) or Backcountry Hut Pass. Maintained in partnership by the NZ Deerstalkers Association and DOC. Caution required crossing the Mohaka River in wet conditions.
